Amtet blev dannet i 1779 fra Anson County. Det var opkaldt efter Charles Lennox, 3. hertug af Richmond og Lennox.
I 1899 den sydøstlige del af Richmond County blev Skotland County.
Keader Keaton, en kolonial amerikansk officer i den amerikanske uafhængighedskrig, var grundlægger af anglo-amerikanske afvikling i Richmond County.
