Rockingham County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population was 91,928. Its county seat is Wentworth.
The county was formed in 1785 from Guilford County. It was named for Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, British Prime Minister from 1765 to 1766 and again in 1782.
The county served as the location for the Searcy & Moore gun factory, which was located at Hogans Creek, a small village located some 20 miles northwest of Greensboro. The firm supplied weapons – dubbed “N.C. Rifles” – to the Confederate States of America forces during the Civil War. Owned by Alexander M. Searcy and Dr. J. S. Moore, the manufactory assembled some 100 rifles for the Rebel forces in 1862–1863.

Charwatkin on “Mary Polly Linder & Robert Knight”
Looking for more information on Mary Polly Linder (1786) who was married to Robert Knight in 1805. They moved to Wilson County, TN. Her father’s name was supposed to have been Nathaniel but that is the basic I have.
Someone had information she may have had a sister named Charlotte – which means her mother’s name could have been Mary.
Polly had a hard life. Robert was killed in the Creek Wars in the Battle of Emuckfaw, AL, in 1814 and the man who she married later, Archibald Young – took her for the Pension Money & then abandoned her. She later divorced him. I believe she may have remarried.
I’d like to get information on her background in NC & any information anyone may have or direction you can send me. She would be my GGG grandmother.
Thank you!
