Guilford Formation, Parents & Wrong-Courthouse Traps
Formation 1771 and parent strategies.
Guilford County was formed in 1771 from Rowan and Orange. Events before that year usually live in parent jurisdictions—not under the modern Guilford label in every catalog.
The most expensive mistake is emotional attachment to a modern county name. Online trees often place a birth “in Guilford” decades early. Test the year against formation, then open each parent hub for deeds, estates, tax lists, and court orders in that decade.
After formation, boundary tweaks and new daughter counties can still move paper trails. When a household “disappears,” test whether they crossed a new line, a city limit, or only changed post office language.
Print a one-page formation log: event year, jurisdiction tried, repository, result, next action. That habit matches how professional researchers avoid wrong-courthouse months.
