Johnston Formation, Parents & Wrong-Courthouse Traps
Formation 1746 and parent strategies.
Johnston County was formed in 1746 from Craven. Events before that year usually live in parent jurisdictions—not under the modern Johnston label in every catalog.
The most expensive mistake is emotional attachment to a modern county name. Online trees often place a birth “in Johnston” decades early. Test the year against formation, then open each parent hub for deeds, estates, tax lists, and court orders.
After formation, boundary tweaks and daughter counties can still move paper trails. When a household “disappears,” test a new line, a city limit, or only a post office rename.
Print a one-page formation log: event year, jurisdiction tried, repository, result, next action.
