Parent Counties Before 1771
Johnston, Cumberland, and Orange still hold pre-formation evidence.
Wake’s 1771 creation means many “Wake” stories begin elsewhere. Search Johnston, Cumberland, and Orange for earlier deeds, estates, tax lists, and court orders. Record the jurisdiction as cited in the original—then map it to modern county hubs.
Later daughters and neighbors matter too: mid-20th-century suburban spillover into Johnston and Durham can hide “Wake” deaths in neighboring newspapers.
