Baptisms, marriages, burials, and membership lists when the state kept no vitals.
Church records often substitute for vital registration. Quaker meetings (especially in the Piedmont), Moravian records around Forsyth/Wachsovia, Baptist and Methodist circuit books, Presbyterian sessions, Episcopal registers, Catholic parishes, and African American congregations each have distinct archives.
