Vital Records (Birth, Marriage, Death)

Statewide registration is late—here is how to prove life events in North Carolina.

North Carolina statewide vital registration expanded in the early 20th century (with earlier local and delayed records). For many 18th–19th century families you will prove events with marriage bonds, church registers, Bibles, newspapers, pensions, and probate—not only a modern certificate.

Where to look

  • County marriage bonds and later licenses
  • Church books (Quaker, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Moravian, Episcopal, Catholic, and others)
  • Newspapers (marriages, obituaries)
  • Delayed birth certificates and state vital statistics (20th century)
  • Military pensions and draft registrations
